Miracle Learning Centre Science Tuition Question on Wave Properties. (O Level Science Tuition/IP Science Tuition/Secondary Science Tuition)

1. The following diagram shows the full-sized plan view of a water-filled pool after a stone was dropped at point C. A water wave with a frequency of 5.0 Hz and an amplitude of 2.0 cm was formed.

a) On the grid below, draw the displacement-time graph of the above water wave. Number the axes clearly. Your diagram should show two complete cycles.

b) Water waves are transverse waves. Explain what you understand by “transverse waves”. _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________

c) Determine the wavelength and the speed of the water wave.

2. (a The figure shows the graph of the variation of the displacement of a wave with distance along the wave at a particular time. State the value for

(i) the amplitude of the wave. ____________________________________________________ (ii) the wavelength of the wave. ____________________________________________________

(b) The figure below shows the graph of the variation of the displacement of the same wave with time at a particular point along the wave. State the value for (i) the period ____________________________________________________ (ii) the frequency of the wave. ____________________________________________________ (iii) Hence, calculate the speed of the wave drawn in the two figures above.

Miracle Learning Centre Answer to Science Tuition Question on Wave Properties. (O Level Science Tuition/IP Science Tuition/Secondary Science Tuition) 1. a) Correct height. Correct width At least 2 waves and good scale b) Transverse waves travel in a direction that is perpendicular to its direction of vibrations. b) Wavelength = 1.0 cm v = f x λ = 5.0 x 1.0 = 5.0 cm/s 2.(ai) 0.6 m (aii) 5.0 m (aiii) 1.25 s (aiv) f = 1/T = 1/1.25 = 0.8 Hz (av) v = fλ = 0.8 x 5.0 = 4 m/s Learn from our Science Tuition Questions and Answers.
